The most frequently asked question from Erasmus students

One of the biggest challenges for students preparing for an Erasmus trip to Italy is visa and formalities . Consular appointments, the Universitaly platform, required documents, and translation procedures can seem complex at first. This guide informs you about current processes and things to consider starting in 2025.

Types of Erasmus visas for Italy

The most frequently requested visas for students going to Italy under the Erasmus program are:

  • National visa type D (for periods exceeding 90 days): Used for Erasmus study or internship programs.

  • Schengen Visa Type C (up to 90 days): Valid for short internships or exchange programs.

👉 If you have a green passport and your stay does not exceed 90 days, you may not need a visa. (Depending on the number of days)

Visa application process

  1. University pre-registration: Pre-registration for the training program is required.

  2. iDATA Application: Italy visa applications from Turkey are accepted via iDATA.

  3. Consular appointment: Documents are submitted and biometric data is collected.

  4. Waiting for results: It can take an average of 4 to 8 weeks and during busy periods it can take longer.

Required documents (updated list 2025)

The following documents are generally required for a visa application:

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months from the return date)

  • Letter of admission – must be obtained from the university

  • Biometric photo

  • Flight reservation (one-way flights are also possible, but a round-trip flight is usually required)

👉 Some documents may require translation into Italian or English . Documents such as civil registry extracts and student certificates may require notarized translations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many days should a hotel reservation be valid for? → Usually, the first 15 days are sufficient.

  • Where can I view the rejection/admission letter from Universitaly? → It can be tracked on the platform and will also be sent via email.

  • How long does it take to receive the visa results? → On average, it takes 1–2 months, but this varies depending on the season.

  • Are any additional documents required for the internship? → The acceptance letter must include the note "Internship/Traineeship."

Tips and advice

  • Start preparing documents early ; translation and notary procedures take time.

  • Please check the iDATA system regularly , as appointments at the consulate fill up quickly.

  • It is recommended to provide proof of at least €6,000 on your bank statement when applying for a visa.

  • Be sure to include it in your Erasmus scholarship documents; it will strengthen your financial strength.

  • You must apply for a residence permit ( Permesso di Soggiorno ) in Italy within 8 days of receiving the visa.

Applying for an Erasmus visa for Italy is easy if you have all the necessary documents prepared and follow the procedures correctly. It's important to submit your application on time and all the required documents. Since the consular and iDATA processes can be time-consuming, early planning is a great advantage.
