The scholarship amount is determined based on the ISEE document, which shows the student's economic situation, and three main criteria:
Cash Scholarship (Quota Monetaria)
The official scholarship announcement for 2025/2026 (band) does not yet include exact figures in tabular form for these categories. However, since increases are made each year in line with the previous year's figures, the official maximum amounts for the 2024/2025 academic year are the most reliable source of reference .
Fuori Sede (Student Studying in a City Different from Their Place of Residence):
Maximum Annual Scholarship: €6,656
This group receives the highest payment because their accommodation and living expenses are higher.
Pendolare (Student whose residence and school are in different municipalities and who provides transportation):
Maximum Annual Scholarship: €3,598
This category includes students who attend school every day but do not live with their families.
In Sede (Students Living in the Same City as Their School or with Their Family):
Maximum Annual Scholarship: €2,682
The lowest level of cash support is given to this group.
⚠️ Important Note: These figures are gross amounts. If the student uses dormitory and cafeteria services, the cost of these services will be deducted from the total scholarship amount, and the remaining amount will be paid in cash.
In-kind support (Services replacing cash)
Meal Support: University cafeterias (mensa) provide the right to one or two free or very low-cost meals a day. This translates to savings of hundreds of euros annually.
Accommodation Support (Dormitory): Students who are awarded dormitory accommodation through the scholarship application process do not pay any extra fees for accommodation. The cost of dormitory services is deducted from the cash scholarship amount mentioned above.
Rent Support (Contributo Affitto)
This is a cash rent assistance program for students with fuori sede status who did not qualify for dormitory accommodation. The finalized figures for the 2025/2026 academic year are as follows:
Annual Rent Contribution: €3,000
Semi-Annual (Single Term) Contribution: €1,500
⏰ Payment Schedule and Frequent Delays
Scholarship payments are usually made in two installments:
1st Installment (50%): During the Autumn/Winter months (usually November–December is targeted).
2nd Installment (50%): During the spring semester (usually March-April).
⚠️ Student Experience: Delays of up to 3-4 months, especially in the payment of the first installment, are quite common. This can cause significant financial difficulties for new students arriving in Italy during their first few months. Therefore, it is vital to plan a budget to cover the first few months before arriving, relying on scholarship payments.
💡 Problems Students Face and Practical Tips
"Why is the scholarship amount less than expected?"
The problem: The biggest confusion for students is that the entire announced maximum amount is not received in cash.
Solution: Remember that the value of free meals and (if applicable) dorm services will be deducted from your total scholarship amount. The net cash you receive will depend on how much you utilize these services.
"Rent Support is Insufficient"
The problem: In large, touristy cities like Florence, Pisa, and Siena, average room rents are around €500-700 per month. The annual rent subsidy of €3,000 is insufficient to cover these costs.
Tip: View rent assistance as part of your budget, not the whole thing. When looking for a home, consider more affordable suburban areas or larger shared apartments.
"I can't get clear information from the DSU office."
Problem: DSU offices can be busy and email responses may be delayed. Websites may not always reflect the most up-to-date information.
Tip: Contact the relevant department directly to get exact figures specific to your case.
Telephone: Call 055 2347200 and ask for the "Servizio Benefici e Interventi Monetari" (Cash Assistance and Payments Service) unit.
Email: Request a written net amount to be applied to you by sending an email to urp@dsu.toscana.it stating your status (fuori sede/pendolare/in sede) and your ISEE value.
