Studielink Guide. How to Apply to Universities in the Netherlands Step by Step (2026)

Studying at a university in the Netherlands means earning one of Europe’s most prestigious diplomas. However, the Dutch application system is slightly different from the familiar “one click application” model. The process is two-step and operates under quota-based rules (Numerus Fixus).

If you are planning to study in the Netherlands for the 2026 academic year, you must understand the Studielink system and its rules in advance. Registering on Studielink alone does not mean your application is complete. Many students realize this too late.

Below is a comprehensive Studielink guide and strategic tips that form the foundation of Dutch university applications.

What Is Studielink?

Studielink is the official government-run central registration platform used to apply to all higher education institutions in the Netherlands, including Research Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences.

It can be compared to the ÖSYM system in Turkey. However, instead of exam scores, Studielink processes application intent and personal data. Creating a Studielink registration is the first and mandatory step in applying to any Dutch university.

Why Is the Dutch Application System Two-Step?

The most common mistake is assuming that the process ends with Studielink. In reality, that is where it begins.

Step 1. Studielink Registration (Opening the Door)You enter your personal information and create an “enrolment application” stating that you wish to apply to a specific program at a specific university. At this stage, no documents are uploaded.

Step 2. University Portal (Submitting the File)Within 24–48 hours after completing your Studielink registration, you receive an email from the university containing login details for its own application portal (for example Osiris or MyUnimaas).

This is where the real application happens.

You upload:

  • Diploma and transcript

  • Motivation letter and CV

  • Language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL)

  • Reference letters if required

Your application will not be evaluated until the university portal is fully completed.

Application Limits and the Numerus Fixus Rule

Studielink does not allow unlimited applications. Strategy matters.

Total Program Limit. 4You may apply to a maximum of 4 programs per academic year. These can be distributed across different universities.

What Is Numerus Fixus? The Most Critical Rule

Numerus Fixus refers to programs with limited capacity that select students through a competitive selection process rather than grades alone. Popular programs such as Psychology, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and International Business often fall into this category.

⚠️ The rule is clear.Out of your 4 total applications, a maximum of 2 can be Numerus Fixus programs.

Example. 2 Numerus Fixus + 2 regular programs is allowed.Mistake. Applying to 3 Numerus Fixus programs is not possible. The system will block it.

Critical Dates for 2026 Applications

The Dutch application calendar is strict. Missing a deadline can cost you an entire year.

  • 1 October 2025. Studielink opens for the 2026–2027 academic year.

  • 15 January 2026 (Very Important). Final deadline for Numerus Fixus programs. No exceptions.

  • 1 April / 1 May 2026. General deadlines for regular programs.

Advisor’s Note.Non-EU students, including Turkish applicants, should complete applications by February–March to allow time for visa and accommodation procedures. May can be too late.

Step-by-Step Application Strategy

A correct Dutch application follows these steps:

  • Program selection. Identify which programs are Numerus Fixus.

  • Studielink account. Create your account using passport details.

  • Start enrolment. Enter up to 4 choices.

  • Email tracking. Monitor portal invitation emails, including spam folders.

  • Document upload. Complete the university portal with all required documents.

  • Selection process. Prepare for exams or interviews if applying to Numerus Fixus programs.

Most Common Mistakes

  • Relying only on Studielink and ignoring the university portal.

  • Missing the 15 January Numerus Fixus deadline.

  • Delaying accommodation search. Housing in the Netherlands is often harder than gaining admission.

🎯 No Room for Risk in Your Dutch Dream

How should you distribute your 4 application choices? Which universities fit your profile best? How should you prepare for Numerus Fixus selection exams?

Dutch university applications require strategic planning. Do not leave your 2026 application to chance.
