Residence Permit in Italy (“Permesso di Soggiorno”) | Step-by-Step Guide to Filling Out the Kit (Form) 📑🇮🇹

If you are studying in Italy as an Erasmus student, you must apply for a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 working days after entering the country.For this application, you will use the so-called “Kit Giallo” (Yellow Kit), a packet containing the main forms: Modulo 1 and Modulo 2.

This guide explains how to correctly fill out Modulo 1, what documents to attach, and how the whole process works at the post office and the Questura (police headquarters).


General Rules and Important Notes

  • Pen: Use only a black ballpoint pen.

  • Writing: Fill out all fields in BLOCK LETTERS.

  • Leave blank: Skip the sections that do not apply to you.

  • Envelope: Do not seal the envelope – the postal clerk will do it.

  • Marca da Bollo: Buy a revenue stamp worth €16.00 (from a Tabacchi shop) and stick it in the top-right corner of the form.


Modulo 1 – Filling Guide (for Erasmus Students)

📄 Page 1 – Header and Sezione 1 & 2

  • Marca da Bollo: Stick it on the top right.

  • Codice Fiscale: Fill in if you already have one, otherwise leave blank.

  • Questura di: The name of the city where you apply (e.g., MILANO).

  • Provincia: Abbreviation of the province (e.g., MI).

  • Sezione 1 (Richiesta – Request):

    • Tick “Rilascio” (first issue).

    • Tick “Permesso di soggiorno”.

    • Motivo del rilascio/rinnovo → Write STUDIO (study).

    • Motivo specifico → Write ERASMUS.

    • Durata (mesi) → Duration of your Erasmus program (e.g., 6–12 months).

  • Sezione 2 (Application Details):

    • Complete this last.

    • “N. FOGLI”: Number of Modulo 1 pages (usually 4) + number of attached documents (passport copy, acceptance letter, etc.).

📄 Page 2 – Sezione 3 & 4 (Personal Data & Address in Italy)

Sezione 3 – Personal Data:

  • Cognome: Surname

  • Nome: First name

  • Sesso: M = Male, F = Female

  • Data di nascita: Date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY)

  • Stato di nascita: Country of birth (e.g., TURCHIA)

  • Cittadinanza: Citizenship (e.g., TURCA)

  • Codice Fiscale: If you have one, enter it

  • Stato civile: Marital status (S = Single, C = Married)

  • Nome Padre / Nome Madre: Optional, can be left blank

  • Passaporto N.: Passport number

  • Data rilascio: Date of issue

  • Valido fino al: Expiry date

  • Rilasciato da: Issuing authority (e.g., TURKEY)

  • Tipo documento: Tick “Passaporto”

Sezione 4 – Address in Italy:

  • Provincia: Province abbreviation (e.g., MI)

  • Comune: City (e.g., MILANO)

  • CAP: Postal code

  • Tipo via/piazza: Street type (e.g., VIA)

  • Indirizzo: Street name

  • N. civico: House number

  • Scala / Interno / Piano: Staircase, apartment, floor (if applicable)

  • Telefono: Italian phone number

  • Email: Email address

  • Tick the box to receive all communications at this address

📄 Page 3 – Sezione 5 & 6

Sezione 5 – Previous Residence Permits:

  • For renewals only → Leave blank for first-time Erasmus applicants

Sezione 6 – Reason for Stay:

  • Motivo del soggiorno: Write STUDIO

  • Tipo di studio: Write CORSO UNIVERSITARIO or ERASMUS

  • Nome Università: Name of your Italian university

  • Indirizzo Università: University address

  • Data inizio corso / Data fine corso: Start and end dates (from your acceptance letter)

  • N. iscrizione: Student registration number (if available, otherwise leave blank)

  • Stato di avanzamento: Tick Primo Anno (first year)

Sezione 7 – Declarations & Signatures:

  • Tick the declaration box

  • Luogo e Data: Place and date of application

  • Firma del Richiedente: Your signature


Modulo 2

  • Generally not required for Erasmus students.

  • Used mainly for work permits or complex financial situations


Required Supporting Documents (Photocopies)

  • Passport (ID page + visa page)

  • University Acceptance Letter

  • Proof of financial means (bank statement or sponsor, approx. €6,000–7,000 recommended)

  • Health insurance valid in Italy

  • Proof of accommodation (rental contract or “Dichiarazione di Ospitalità”)

  • Codice Fiscale card (if available)


Post Office (Poste Italiane) Procedure

  1. Insert Modulo 1 and all copies into the Kit Giallo envelope (do not seal).

  2. Go to a Sportello Amico counter at any post office.

  3. Pay the fees (approx. €116.46, plus €16 Marca da Bollo).

  4. Receive the Ricevuta (receipt) → very important, as it shows your Questura appointment.👉 This receipt is your temporary legal proof of residence in Italy until your card is issued.


Questura Appointment

  • Bring all original documents + 2 passport photos.

  • Your fingerprints will be taken.

  • The Questura will check your documents.

  • You will be notified (often by SMS) when your residence permit card is ready.
