Rome La Sapienza University 2026–2027 Application Calendar: Who Can Apply and When?

Rome Sapienza University , one of Italy's oldest and the world's most prestigious universities, has finalized its application schedule for the 2026–2027 academic year.

The application process this year has stricter rules than ever before. The different deadlines set for non-EU and EU citizens could result in a one-year delay if misinterpreted.

Below, we've listed the deadlines and critical alerts you shouldn't miss, based on your status. ⚠️

🌍 Category 1: Non-EU and Visa Required Applicants

This group includes Turkish students residing in Turkey who are required to obtain an Italian Student Visa for educational purposes.

📅 Critical Application Deadline:

🔴 May 15, 2026

Who falls into this category?

  • Citizens of the Republic of Türkiye residing in Türkiye.

  • Those without a European Union residence permit.

  • Those who will handle the visa/equivalency (CIMEA) process through the consulate.

⚠️ Important Warning: Sapienza is very clear on this. Even if you log in to the system after May 15, 2026, the application screens for non-EU applicants will be closed.

Category 2: Language Restriction (For Non-EU Candidates)

One of the most common mistakes and overlooked details in Sapienza applications is the language selection.

📅 Application Period:

🔴 May 15, 2026 – Late June 2026

❗ Note: During this specific date range and under certain procedures, there may be instances where non-EU candidates are only directed to Italian-language programs .

  • Risk: Thinking "The program is in English anyway, I can just apply" might automatically lead to your application being rejected.

  • Requirement: For applications in this category , a B2 level Italian language certificate is usually required.

🇪🇺 Category 3: EU Citizens and Those with Equivalent Status

This group includes candidates who don't have visa issues and have more flexible bureaucratic processes.

📅 Application Deadline:

🔴 July 31, 2026

Who falls into this category?

  • Those with dual citizenship (e.g., Turks with Bulgarian, Romanian, etc. passports).

  • Those who hold a permanent residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) in Italy or another EU country.

What are the advantages?

  • Access to programs in both English and Italian is wider.

  • Since there is no visa procedure, the application timeline may extend until summer.

🧭 What is the right strategy for applying to Sapienza?

This university does not tolerate mistakes. To guarantee your application, follow this roadmap:

  1. Determine your status: Are you an EU citizen or a non-EU citizen? This is a key factor that will affect your timeline.

  2. Don't wait until May 15th: There are limited places for non-EU applicants. It's always advantageous to complete your application before the deadline.

  3. Language Proficiency: If you want an English-language program, carefully read the requirements for Non-EU quotas and pre-selection periods.

✅ Summary Checklist

  • [ ] Non-EU (Visa Required): Deadline 15 May 2026 .

  • [ ] Program Language: For non-EU candidates, there may be a requirement for Italian only during certain periods, please note.

  • [ ] EU Citizen / Residence Permit: Deadline 31 July 2026 .

🎯 Why is Professional Consulting Essential?

In state-run universities with heavy bureaucracy, such as Roma La Sapienza, the problem is usually not "missing documents." The problem is the wrong status selection, the wrong program code, and the wrong timing.

One wrong click could result in your application being rejected without being considered.
